About Us
The Department Of Chemistry is one of the oldest departments established on 4th February 1875 . The Post Graduate & Research department of Chemistry of the Presidency College, has the rare honour of being one of the oldest Natural science departments in the erstwhile British regime. Since its inception the department has grown in leaps and bounds to become a prominent research centre in Asia where many eminent scientists and scholars were shaped. Professor J. l. Simonsen has done excellent work in hydrocarbons Professor V. B. Biman Bihari Dey has done outstanding work in synthesis of hydrocarbon. During his period (1923-1944) this department was instrumental in manufacturing of TNT during World War II. Professor M. V. Sitaraman has done remarkable work in investigation of luminescence and fluorescence in organic substances. Professor T. R. Govindachari a natural product chemist of the department was awarded “Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar” prize for his contributions in the field of extraction of natural products. Professor B.Ramachandra Pai : During the era of Ramachandra Pai and Dr.T. R. Govindachari owing to the untiring effort the research a activities gradually increased and the department attained formidable reputation in whole of and was the first to conduct research on alkaloids. Xanthones of GarciniaMangostana Linn were isolated and structure elucidation was done in the chemistry department laboratory the first of its kind in Asia. The famous pain balm Amrutanjan was formulated here in the year 1960s. The department has also made its mark in the national and international arena on the isolation and structural elucidation of many novel plant alkaloids, terpenes and oxygen heterocyclics.
