About Us
Presently offering Post Graduate and Research programs, the Sanskrit Department boasts of a hoary past and a glittering tradition. From the very inception of this institution (the Presidency College), Sanskrit was offered as a subject and its first batch of degree graduates came out in 1914. In 1911, along with few other subjects, Sanskrit Honours degree was introduced. Till date, for more than 107 years, students graduate and lead a positive, progressive and peaceful life. Some of our alumni were the KINGS of Travancore and Tirupanittura palaces, brilliant minds bearing whose names some institutes are still functioning, many who won laurels and accolades from the Government (Mahamahopadyaya in those days and President’s Certificate for meritorious service to language, these days), many who have been the Heads, Professors and Teachers at various Sanskrit offering Institutes and some others who won international acclaim for their academic achievements. Presently, about 60 percent of our alumni occupy the post of Sanskrit Lecturers in city colleges and teachers in schools. By uncompromising syllabus quality, unadulterated traditional way of teaching combined with modern research outlook, infusion of deep sense of patriotism, offering biographical snippets of many illustrious leaders to upgrade their (students’) values, the teachers carry the torch bridging the past and the future against many odds, myriads of difficulties and challenge galore. This torch is still carried on to the posterity by the determined, dexterous and dedicated alumni. And the march goes on and on and on…… Dr. O.R. Devanathan (Head of the Department)
