About Us
The Department of Mathematics was established in 1855 by the renowned Mathematician and Founder-Principal, Prof. Eyre Burton Powel and celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2005. The Department adorns with rich tradition in research and teaching, with vibrant academic programme and unparalleled curriculum from undergraduate courses to Ph.D programme. More than one hundred research articles were published in international journals and 22 aspirants were accorded with Doctorate degree. Every year the department hosts P. Subramanian Endowment Lecture, a series of lectures delivered by eminent professors from reputed institutions. The Department celebrates Ramanujan Day, to commemorate the greatest mathematician who contributed extensively to the various fields such as mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions. Prof. E. W. Middlemast and Prof. P. V. Seshu Iyer of this Department played a crucial role that transformed Srinivasa Ramanujan to the genius of the 20th century. The books lend by Srinivasa Ramanujan from the Department library that triggered his genius are “Synopsis of Pure and Applied Mathematics” by Carr, “Elliptic Functions” by Greenhill, “Tracts on Orders of Infinity” by Hardy are still treasured and preserved in the Department library. The Department has witnessed several brilliant mathematicians-in-the-making pass through its portals to serve the country as well as their field of study. Some of the notable alumni of this department are Tmt. Lakshmi Pranesh I.A.S, Former Chief secretary to Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Prof. T. Vijayaraghavan, Founder Director and First professor of Ramanujan Institute of Advanced Study in Mathematics(RIASM), University of Madras, Prof. S. Sribala, Former Director, RIASM, Prof. S. Parvathy, Former Director, RIASM, and Prof. S. Dharmaraja, Professor & HOD, IIT Delhi.
