About Us
The Department of Economics was established in 1920. It is one of the leading departments promoting research and higher education, particularly the downtrodden and marginalised segments of the society. The Department offers UG, PG, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees, in which the UG degree is offered in both Tamil and English Mediums. It is one of the three departments in the College which provides the UG degree under Shift II programme. It is highly beneficial to those who are employed. The Department now has 12 Permanent and four Temporary Staff Members. Out of the 16 Staff Members, 14 are Doctorates. The first person to Head the Department was Prof. John Mathai (1920-1925), who later become the second Finance Minister of India. The other notable academicians who have headed the Department are Prof. R.N. Poduval, Prof. S.Velayudham, Prof. K.A. Joseph and Prof. S.Venkatasamy. Prof. Gilbert Slater, the first Professor in the Department of Economics, University of Madras, interacted with the economics faculty and students of Presidency College. Many leading economists, academicians, and statesmen have been produced by this department. The former Minister for Agriculture, Government of India, Mr. C.Subraminam, Mr. N. Ram, former Editor of The Hindu and Frontline, well-known industrialist Mr.Palani.G.Periyasamy, former Governor (in North Eastern States) His excellancy T.V. Rajeswar, some of the leading politicians, Vice-chancellors and researchers have studied in this Department.
