The Subject of Geology was started at Allied level in the Biology Department from the year 1886. Dr Murrey Steward was appointed as Professor of Geology in 1910 when a separate Geology department was started. Prof. H. Narayana Rao followed him from 1916. Prof C K K Pillai (CK as popularly known) took over in 1923 and he was also famous as a State Player in Cricket and a great sportsman. He had been an excellent tutor in “Map drawing” classes. In 1942, Prof T N Muthuswamy headed the Geology Department who was also the classmate of Dr M S Krishnan, the First Indian Director General of the GSI (1951-55). In the field, it was a great experience to learn from Prof Muthuswamy as he would explain and show intricate geological features like ptygmatic folding, unconformity, joints and spheroidal weathering. Dr K Venugopal who completed his Ph D from Imperial College, London was the HOD from 1953 followed by Prof P G Dowie in 1956. Dr S Saravanan became the Chief Professor and head in 1965 and continued till 1979. He was instrumental in having a DST research project for Rs 5 lakhs on trace element geochemistry and installing the first Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) in the department. He published numerous research papers and books. His Tamil writeup on Iron ores of Salem won State award in Science books. He guided a number of Ph D and M Phil students. Dr S Subramanian who became the HOD in 1979 had his Ph D from Madras University and was a member of numerous boards of studies. He updated and reorganised the UG and PG courses through a Government appointed committee. He organised a workshop on ‘Recent Studies in Mineralogy and Petrology’ in January, 1990. Dr U S Ramachandran who obtained his Ph D from Madras University headed the department from 1995 and Dr C Navaneetha Krishnan from 1997. Dr G B Sukumaran who obtained his Ph D from Madras University took over in 2002. He obtained a new AAS for the department and promoted research activities. He guided a number of Ph D students. He is a prolific writer in Tamil and wrote books. Dr G C Chandrasekaran, having his initial appointment as a Demonstrator in 1978, became the HOD in 2009. Dr R Sabhanayagam was in the Chair in 2010 and interacted well with the Alumini of the department. Later he became the Principal of our college. Dr R Jayagopal was as HOD in 2012 for a brief period and Dr R Sivakumar was HOD from the year 2012 to 2018. Dr.B.Gowtham is current HOD of the Department. As we all know, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), New Delhi conducts annual Geologists’ examination since 1964 for appointment to the Geological Survey of India (GSI), an organised service. Sri Krishnan Unni, former Director General, GSI stood first in 1964 exam, followed by Dr Krishnan Ayyasami, former Dy Director General, GSI first in 1974 and Sri C Vijayakumar first in 1977 who, instead, joined Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and retired as the Chief Geologist. Capt R Natesan has the distinction of becoming a soldier in Indian army (short service commission) and retired to become a Human Resources Management Expert in a public sector company. We have a proud legacy of one of our alumni and former Professor, Dr S Ramanathan, Ph. D., as the captain of the Tamil Nadu Basket Ball team in 1967. He had consistently shown excellence in captaining Madras University team (1964-65) and participated in Basket Ball tournaments in Sri Lanka in 1962, 64 and 67. His classmate and our alumini Dr K Lakshminarayanan was his team mate in all these tournaments. From 1992, women candidates were admitted to Geology course regularly and now we have a fair representation of them. They really compete with men in winning laurels in studies and other extracurricular activities.
